A healthy mouth is vital for a healthy, long and yummy life. Taking care of your teeth and gums not only gives you a sparkling, beautiful smile and delicious fresh breath, but is actually your first line of defense in health. Which is why I’m bursting with excitement to share with you a super weapon I discovered to help you optimize your oral health: the ionic toothbrush.
I’ve been a oral neat freak for as long as I can remember. I’m absolutely addicted to that slippery smooth feeling right after brushing my teeth, which I do at least three times a day. I’m also the proud owner of a small army of manual, electric and sonic toothbrushes in addition to half a dozen non-toxic toothpastes in a variety of flavors, an array of herbal mouthwashes and essential oil drops for teeth and gum health, as well as a collection of mineralizing tooth powders. I did mention the freak part before, didn’t I? Few things make me feel more uncomfortable with myself than sweater teeth or morning breath. Not only because it’s so much nicer to kiss the day (and anyone else :)) with a fresh mouth, but because I know about the havoc the accumulation of bad bacteria can wreak on our all over health. Bacteria from our mouth can easily get into our bloodstream and cause inflammation and infection wherever it spreads. Which is why it is so important we make sure to nurture a healthy oral environment and to keep plaque, the soft, icky-sticky film containing millions of bacteria, off our teeth. Meet my new super tool for a super clean and healthy mouth, the ionic toothbrush!
While the ionic toothbrush is not a new item on the oral hygiene market, it’s still very much a niche product that many people are not aware of. But they should be! In fact it boggles my mind that dentists are not sending every single one of their patients home with one. It is that phenomenal of a device!
How does it work? Instead of scrubbing or scraping the plaque of your teeth like most other toothbrushes do, the ionic toothbrush actually gets your teeth to release the plaque. This is because the ionic toothbrush works on the principle of “opposites attract”, or, in more scientific terms, on the principle of polarity: opposite charges attract, and like charges repel. The surface of our teeth is negatively charged while plaque bacteria is positively charged. They are, so to speak, madly attracted to each other. A match made in oral health hell. This is where the ionic toothbrush comes in. It temporarily switches the polarity of the surface of our teeth to positive while at the same time attracting the plaque to the negatively charged toothbrush bristles. The plaque even gets released from very hard to reach places. In addition, the ionic toothbrush also changes our positively charged saliva to a liquid that is negatively charged which makes it near impossible for bacteria to survive.
Another neat thing about ionic toothbrushes is that you don’t even need to use toothpaste with them. I still do, because I love the flavor (vanilla #nom, strawberry #nomnom), however it’s not necessary to give your mouth a deep clean. Which makes this type of brush ideal to keep in my handbag when I’m on the go or for travel.
The first time I used my ionic toothbrush, I was blown away by how smooth and clean my teeth felt the next morning when I got up. As if I had just brushed them a few minutes ago. Needless to say, I’m absolutely hooked and the ionic toothbrush has become an essential tool in my oral health care.
